Credit Repair

Credit Files (sometimes called credit reports)
When you apply for credit, the lender will score your application form, and then obtain a copy of your credit file from the credit reference agencies. He will inspect your credit file carefully, paying particular attention to your repayment habits with any other lenders that you have dealt with previously.

Unfortunately where credit is concerned, your past record will be taken as a very real indication of your present (and future) creditworthiness. The lender will also use this file to cross check that the information that you gave on the application form is true.

Getting your own copy.
The law states that whilst you cannot have too much say about how your credit file is compiled, you are certainly entitled to obtain a copy of it to read. In order to get this, you will need to contact the credit reference agencies. This can be done by regular mail or by an on-line request at their respective web sites. Allow 7 days for them to process your request and another few days for delivery, as they will only provide the results by regular mail. The addresses of the 2 main UK credit reference agencies are as follows:

Equifax - P.O. Box 3001, Glasgow, G81 2DT - (www.equifax.co.uk )

Experian - P.O. Box 8000, Nottingham NG1 5GX - (www.experian.co.uk)

Although some other web sites now offer on-line viewing of your 'public credit-file' this will only contain public record information such as county court records and electoral roll information. It will therefore be an incomplete picture and may be an expensive choice!

Credit Repair Agencies
A credit repair agency is a company who will try to improve your credit rating by taking up your individual case for you. However it is not as simple as handing them the case and forgetting about it! This is because only you can sign each piece of paperwork, and so a credit repair agency will simply act as a middleman providing you with profiled letters to send to lenders and credit bureaus. Credit repair agencies will also require you to forward all incoming correspondence back to their office so that they can write replies, but in many cases they may well not deal with things as quickly as you would like. Because many of these companies know that you will rely on them during the process, charges can be quite high with extras being added at will! We recommend that consumers take great care when thinking of using credit repair agencies. It is easier, quicker, and cheaper to do-it-yourself using the information contained in the guide.
